Ah yes “a Maserati, this one is nicer than mine” – If you can remember what movie this quote is from you are doing better than me. However, you may have never known what a Maserati is. You don’t see them on every street corner. They are rare and unique. The Red Shamal is one of 369… so the numbers are low.
Today Maserati sells a several high end models from SUV’s to convertibles. However, the two featured here are not exactly new they are special and limited. The Maserati Ghibli Cup & Maserati Shamal have been one of my all time favorite cars. I don’t know if it is the boxy body with smooth lines or that it does not look like anything else (I never have liked the bandwagon for anything especially cars).
How does Maserati define and explain who they are? From their site:
“An Italian story. A global icon. Elegance, style and sporting performance with a long and glorious heritage”
“Every Maserati is like a work of art constructed with the care and attention that only the human hand can provide. Commission your very own Maserati and customize it to fit your needs.”
So they are very proud of their history that started in the early 1900’s – and perhaps these are two good examples of modern exotics that are still tied to old world mechanics. Nothing on these cars would be classified as digital. I don’t know if the wing in front of the windshield on the red Shamal does anything but look cool – but it does just that. Those boxy fenders make the BMW M3 E30 fenders look like after thoughts, these are the real deal.
The Red 91 Shamal is featured on Ebay here: This 1991 Maserati Shamal (VIN ZAMAL1108FB312950) is one of just 369 made between late 1989 and 1996, and represents an interesting period in the marque’s history as the last car developed under De Tomaso ownership. The TT V8 Shamal was also the last and ultimate evolution of the Biturbo, and is generally viewed to be a massive improvement on earlier V6 cars. This one looks sharp, and the seller claims it’s one of just two in North America. Find it here on eBay in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada with a $120k USD BIN.
The silver 1996 Maserati Ghibli is one of 60 special edition Cup examples built from 1996-1997. Finished in Grigio Silver Metallic with black leather interior, a great looking example of a Ghibli Cup… Too bad that this car is in Italy and would need to be imported, and you would need to work something out potentially with the government to see IF they would let it in.
I could see myself driving up to Grandpa’s in the mountains with this puppy with the girls holding on for dear life. Italian dreams…
