Blue Light Special, a call to action!

When I first saw this my immediate thought was could it be possible to create a Blue Light Special for business?

The guys and gals at Amazon must be into loosing money, their new Fire Tablet has a very low entry price point. Looking at this new promo for the new 7″ tablet for $49 it made me think about when I was growing up. Visiting Kmart, we always looked for the Blue Light Special cart. We wanted to see the “deal” for the day or week was. Most of the time, it was not for kids (overstocked cloths or a Crockpot). For some reason the Blue Light marketing worked on us. It was always our first destination when visiting Kmart. Both of my girls have similar versions (because they were bought over the years) and have different features, however both cost more than this new unit released in a couple of days (September 30th 2015).

Let’s take a look at the Blue Light Special from Amazon, the New 7″ Kindle Fire:

This item will be released on September 30, 2015. – Ships from and sold by Gift-wrap available.

  • Beautiful 7″ IPS display (171 ppi / 1024 x 600) and fast 1.3 GHz quad-core processor. Rear and front-facing cameras.
  • All-new Amazon Underground, a one-of-a-kind app store experience where over $10,000 in apps, games and even in-app items are actually free – including extra lives, unlocked levels, unlimited add-on packs and more

  • Up to 7 hours of reading, surfing the web, watching videos, and listening to music
  • Stay connected with fast web browsing, email, and calendar support

Is it an iPad Air? No, but as you can see (linked here) it is over 6 times cheaper. For kids or Adults alike it is a very effective model. You can replace the Kindle Fire Tablet 6 times before you approach the cost of the iPad. Plus they say it is almost two times tougher. For parents though, we especially liked this feature called Amazon FreeTime.

Amazon FreeTime allows parents to set daily limits (screen time) for tablet use, or restrict certain categories—like games and video—while leaving unlimited time for reading.

Kindle Fire Features we use (parental control):

  1. Weekday hours (When it can be turned on, when it turns off automatically and the amount of screen time.
  2. Weekend hours (Same as above but with different settings for the weekend).
  3. Setting Goals, and objectives (KPI’s). You can set the amount of time you child needs to read (from the 10K+ library) before watching video’s or playing games.

It is a very handy feature….

How would you use the Kindle Fire or iPad Air for your Business?

Either a Kindle File 7″ tablet or an iPad Mini / Air will work for this business idea to market to customers in your store. If you browse your local grocery store, or Target you will see a common theme in the modern shopping experience. Everywhere you go, you see marketing (even if you don’t recognize it). A sign, a coupon, price lists and pop up floor displays, it is everywhere. Instead of hiring a fleet of people to help create these idea’s I am guessing you know your customers best, and you can use a tablet to help communicate your Blue Light specials.

What if you used a tablet to display information in a key strategic spot? Like at a casher / check out location? How about above an item for sale or of interest “the next hottest thing”? How about something that customers may not know? Perhaps a “Did you know” about on site services, “Hey, you bout this TV from us, did you know for $100 we will install it?
There are literally a million ways to promote items in your store using a tablet.

So what do you need to do? Follow the ABC’s

  1. Buy the table of your choice (see the links below) – the new Kindle Fire 7″ tablet which sparked this blog post should be a good choice. However, you may have an iPhone or other Apple device and it may not make sense for you to switch.
    1. *Keep in mind this would be a semi dedicated unit for business reasons (someone “Could” walk off with it). Think about your risk.
  2. Get a mount to present your a slide show to your customers (be strategic in placement). Depending on your business and location it may need to be totally secure and locked down, you could use one of the mounts below.
  3. Download an app like PhotoStage Pro Edition linked below… Create some simple photo’s of a specific topic, place text of the image. If you need a “blank” wall you can create your own “white” background and place text on it. This software is especially nice as you can export the slide show for multiple purposes. Upload to your YouTube channel, or and on your web site. Then if you upload to YouTube or your web site, use the content in your email to customers.

In conclusion, I think you can see my original thought “The Blue Light Special” you can use for your business to create a call to action. I think it is possible and you can use a Kindle Fire or iPad Air (or any tablet) to create your very own Blue Light Special to increase awareness or additional sales.
